Over 700,000 persons registered to vote; 2790 polling stations to be established – GECOM

Deputy Chief Election Officer Anneal Giddings has revealed that there are 757,690 electors registered to contest in the September 1 General and Regional Elections.

He made the disclosure today during a press conference hosted by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

Meanwhile, GECOM will be establishing 2,790 polling stations (1,151 polling places) across the country on September 1. Of these, 62 polling places will be located at private residences.

During the press conference, it was disclosed that 3972 applications for proxy were submitted by the GECOM officials were unable to divulge how many were approved/rejected.

GECOM also noted that information clerks will be placed at each polling station to assist citizens with queries.

As customary, members of the Disciplined Services will vote ahead of polling day. A total of 10,481 disciplined services personnel, comprising members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), and Guyana Prison Services (GPS), have been listed to vote on D-Day, scheduled for Friday, August 22.

The breakdown of the ranks is 6909 ranks from the GPF, 3106 ranks from the GDF and 466 ranks from the GPS.

Though the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is often included as a member of the joint services, those members will be voting on E-Day and are not catered for on D-Day.

The ranks will be voting at 87 balloting stations across the country and will be voting using ballot papers in accordance with the district that the ranks are from.
