General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has said the opposition parties that exist in the country are “doing practically nothing” and that they are opportunistic.
He made the remarks on Thursday during his weekly news conference at Freedom House.
“The Opposition Parties now are doing practically nothing in the country, absolutely nothing but just opportunistically trying to complain, saying this road wasn’t done well but never mind we [PPP/C] did 7,000 roads already,” Jagdeo said.
“The opportunism is palpable, it is so blatant that only a person who is [blinking] will not see the opportunism,” he added.
The PPP GS referred to the government’s plans to upgrade the Le Repentir Cemetery which then sparked a motion in the National Assembly from Opposition Member of Parliament Volda Lawrence.
“So, when people see us [rehabilitating the cemetery], they will think Volda caused it,” Jagdeo highlighted.
He also referred to the opposition’s motion to remove sirens and flashing lights from non-emergency vehicles.
“They know President Ali has given instructions already and that it is illegal. You don’t need to go with a motion to Parliament to do that, you just need to call on the Commissioner [of Police] to do it because the President has instructed him that these people are abusing the siren, etc.,” Jagdeo said.
Jagdeo also made reference to the opposition members’ attempt to lend support to rice farmers now, after they were complaining about the prices for paddy.
“I see some clowns running around saying they’re supporting the rice farmers, where were they last year?”
Through the government’s intervention, millers have now agreed to pay rice farmers a minimum of $4000 per bag of paddy.
Jagdeo, who is also the country’s Vice President, made it clear that his government is proactive in upgrading facilities across the country and in helping citizens in various sectors.
Last year, Jagdeo had revealed that Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton is earning $1.8 million per month for doing ‘practically nothing’.
