One year jail for man caught smoking marijuana

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Donald Petambar was sentenced to one year imprisonment for smoking cannabis sativa (marijuana) on Monday, November 25.

The 21-year-old miner pleaded guilty to the offence before Magistrate Judy Latchman. The particulars of the case revealed that on Friday, November 22 at DaSilva Street Newtown Kitty, Georgetown, he smoked the illegal substance.

Police prosecutor, Renetta Bentham told the court on that day around 16:00 hrs the police acting on information received, went into a yard in Da Silva Street, Kitty to search for narcotics.

Upon arrival, the defendant was seen at the back of the yard smoking an unusual cigarette. It was taken from him and examined when it was observed that it contains cannabis.

Bentham said he was shown the content of the said cigarette and cautioned, when he admitted that he normally smokes marijuana. The defendant was arrested after a subsequent investigation was carried out. In addition to the one year imprisonment, Petambar was also fine $3,000.
