The iconic Number 63 Beach in Region Six has been further transformed with the commissioning of a new recreational park – the 18th and largest facility developed under the National Recreational Protocol.
During the commissioning ceremony, First Lady Arya Ali said the development represents much more than an investment in beautification, as the government continues to create public spaces that support healthier, more connected communities while improving citizens’ quality of life.
“What stands before us today is a remarkable transformation of acres of land made possible through meaningful collaboration between the Government of Guyana and the community,” the first lady said.
For generations, Number 63 Beach has been one of Guyana’s well-known recreational destinations, particularly for families travelling to the Corentyne coast to fly kites, enjoy the seaside, and spend time together.
However, the first lady noted that despite its natural beauty and sentimental value, the beach previously lacked the amenities and facilities necessary to fully realise its potential.
The newly developed recreational park now features a secure children’s play area, gazebos, washroom facilities, walking paths, seating, lighting and vending kiosks.
She said the development forms part of a broader approach to community development that places emphasis on physical infrastructure, as well as creating spaces that support the physical, mental and social well-being of citizens.
“I hope this park will also create new opportunities for local vendors, small businesses, and entrepreneurs, allowing the benefits of this investment to extend beyond recreation and into the livelihoods of families in surrounding communities,” she said.
She also called on residents to take ownership of the facility and help protect the investment for future generations.
The development was realised through collaboration involving the government, community, Ministry of Public Works, Regional Democratic Council, contractors and other stakeholders.
The first lady expressed hope that the transformed Number 63 Beach will remain a place where families can create memories, strengthen relationships and enjoy recreational opportunities for generations to come. [DPI]
