After a thorough investigation by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), Nigerian national Matthew Ejike Nwachukwu was found guilty of orchestrating multiple romance and package delivery scams across Guyana in 2022. These scams defrauded numerous victims of millions of dollars.
On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Magistrate Rushell Liverpool of the Wismar Magistrate Court convicted Nwachukwu on two counts of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony under Section 33 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on each count.
Nwachukwu was first charged and remanded in September 2022, following a complaint from a woman who believed she was in a relationship with a German man online. She was convinced to pay G$155,000 to collect supposed valuable packages, claimed to contain diamonds, via FedEx. She later learned the delivery and fees were part of an elaborate scam.
During the trial, SOCU presented evidence linking Nwachukwu to the operation, showing he coordinated with agents who collected money on behalf of the so-called German mastermind at the McKenzie Post Office.
Prosecutors Aaron Daniels and Neville Jeffers led the case for SOCU, while Lawrence Harris represented Nwachukwu. Authorities are still pursuing the German ringleader and other accomplices as part of a broader investigation into romance and package scams run by Nigerian nationals in Guyana.
