President Dr Irfaan Ali this afternoon visited the construction site at the junction of Heroes Highway and the eastern approach road for the New Demerara River Bridge.
There, he provided an update on the construction works, noting that everything is on track for the bridge to be opened by month-end.
“From everything I’ve seen and been told, we’re looking for an opening before the end of this month. When I say opening – opening fully for traffic,” President Ali said.
He noted that the bridge is going through its final phases of testing, including load testing.
Additionally, road works are progressing and will be completed on time to ensure there is great efficiency in terms of traffic flow when the bridge opens.
“The ultimate goal is to have…two flyovers: one of the Heroes Highway and one on the West Bank. But those are projects we’re looking at in the future and not immediately,” he noted.
The new crossing consists of four lanes and spans 2.6 kilometres, connecting Nandy Park on the East Bank of Demerara to La Grange on the West Bank of Demerara.
At its highest point, the bridge is 50 metres, which means Handymax vessels can pass comfortably underneath. With a lifespan of 100 years, the bridge is expected to mitigate current traffic woes and congestion.
The new crossing will operate 24/7, toll-free, and accommodate vehicles of all sizes and weights, with a maximum speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour.
Its design will also feature the Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH), the country’s second-highest national award.
