Minister of Education Sonia Parag said Guyana’s school feeding programme is among the most extensive in the Caribbean, providing nutritional support to thousands of students across the country.

Speaking at the commissioning of a new wing at Yarrowkabra Primary School on Tuesday, she noted that in some Caribbean countries, school feeding programmes are limited to a small number of schools, as Guyana continues to expand to reach students nationwide.

“There is no school feeding programme that is touching the lives of children as it is in Guyana. Believe me, I have done my homework. I have done my research in the rest of the Caribbean,”Minister Parag said.

Minister Parag also acknowledged that there are occasional challenges with the programme’s implementation but the ministry is working to address every issue.

She noted that the programme continues to have a significant impact on the lives of students and their families by ensuring children receive nutritious meals that support learning and development.

The programme offers hot meals such as breakfast and lunch, along with juice and biscuit snacks.

The breakfast component alone is currently offered in about 240 schools, benefitting more than 5,100 learners. In addition, the programme offers steady employment and financial empowerment to approximately 340 caterers.

The initiative is part of the government’s universal access to education policy, geared at ensuring children are fed while attending school. [DPI]
