Manzoor Nadir has returned as Speaker of the National Assembly.
He was nominated by Prime Minister Mark Phillips and seconded by Member of Parliament (MP) Gail Teixeira. There were no other nominees.
In brief remarks at Monday’s opening of the 13th Parliament, Nadir promised to be impartial in the execution of his duties.
Meanwhile, Dr Vishwa Mahadeo was elected Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. The other nominee for the position was Tabitha Sarabo-Halley.
Mahadeo secured 36 votes while Sarabo-Halley gained 17.
Mahadeo is a Member of Parliament (MP) for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and a medical doctor by profession.
