Man tells Court he uses Marijuana to treat Asthma; fined $20,000

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Alex Pickering was fined $20,000 by Magistrate Ann McLennan for possession of marijuana. The unrepresented man admitted that on December 02 at Cornhill Street, Georgetown, he had in the illegal substance in his possession.

Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones told the court that on the day in question, police ranks saw Pickering on Cornhill Street acting in a suspicious manner, following which they searched him and found the marijuana in his left side pants pocket.

Pickering told the Court that he suffers from Asthma and uses the substance for that purpose.

After being fined $20,000, the man told the Court that he only had $14,000 in his possession; as such Magistrate McLennan ordered that he pay the remainder before December 10.

He was also ordered to do four weeks community service and failure to do so will result in six months imprisonment.
