A 49-year-old resident of lot 436 One Mile, Wismar, Linden was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of being in possession of narcotics.

Cleveland Fortune pleaded not guilty to the charge, when it was read by Cheif Magistrate Ann McLennan, alleging that on November 02, 2016, at Omai Landing, he had in his possession 29 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The prosecution facts stated that the illegal drug was found at the top of the defendant’s freezer. The facts further disclosed that Fortune admitted to the police he had the cannabis in his possession for the purpose of smoking.

However, the defending attorney-at-law, Stanley Moore, contended that the drugs were found in an open area where several truck drivers were situated.

Moore tried to acquire bail for his client by informing the court that Fortune was a father of eight, seven of whom he was required to maintain.

Due to the nature of the crime, the defendant was refused bail and the matter was transferred to the Mahdia’s Magistrates’ Court where Fortune is expected to make an appearance on January 17, 2017.
