Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is deeply concerned about the spate of vehicular accidents involving the Company’s electricity infrastructure, the latest of which occurred along the Kitty Public Road, Georgetown, between Queen Street and Vlissengen Road, at approximately 15:30h on Tuesday.
The accident involved Motor Lorry GAD 5037, owned and driven by Ganesh Badal, and Motor Car PAL 9858, owned and driven by Lennox Syfox.
The incident resulted in significant damage to GPL’s electricity network, including a broken 9-metre wooden utility pole and damage to two pole spans of secondary mains. Consequently, customers in sections of Kitty between Queen Street and Vlissengen Road experienced an interruption in electricity service.
Fortunately, no one was severely injured. However, GPL emphasises that the damage and downing of power lines could have resulted in serious injury or loss of life, posing a danger to those involved and members of the public.
Both drivers were taken into police custody, and the vehicles were lodged at the Kitty Police Station as the Guyana Police Force continues its investigation into the incident.
GPL’s technical team is carrying out the necessary remedial works to repair the damaged network and restore electricity to affected customers.
The Company remains deeply concerned about the frequency of vehicular accidents involving its electricity infrastructure. Such incidents pose serious safety risks, damage critical network components, result in substantial repair costs and disrupt electricity service to customers.
GPL again urges motorists to exercise greater caution when using the roadways, particularly near electrical infrastructure.
Upon completion of the investigation and determination of the circumstances surrounding the incident, GPL will take the necessary steps to recover costs associated with repairing or replacing the damaged infrastructure.
GPL apologises to affected customers for the inconvenience caused and thanks them for their patience and understanding.
