The Private Sector Commission (PSC) on Thursday urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to keep the nation informed as investigations continue into the deadly terror attack in Georgetown on Sunday.

In a statement, the PSC congratulated law enforcement officials in the country for the major breakthrough in the case, which led to the arrest of the alleged terrorist, Venezuelan national, Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo.

The PSC said it “congratulates the men and women of our security forces for their exceptional professionalism, vigilance, and dedication in swiftly bringing to justice those responsible for the recent terrorist attack at the gas station in Georgetown.”

“The Commission commends the outstanding work of the Guyana Police Force and all supporting national security agencies and recognizes that their timely intelligence, coordination, and operational excellence resulted in the apprehension of the perpetrator and prevented the probability of further intended sabotage,” the PSC’s statement further noted.

Sunday’s bombing resulted in the death of six-year-old Soraya Bourne and injuries to several others.

According to the PSC, it strongly condemns this cowardly act of violence.

“This attack, reportedly orchestrated by a foreign national with local collaborators, represents a grave assault on the peace and security that all Guyanese hold dear,” it noted.

Investigations revealed that the alleged terrorist, who is linked to one of Venezuela’s most notorious criminal networks – the R Organization (Organización R) – illegally entered Guyana via a boat on Sunday morning – just hours before he planted the bomb at the Mobil Gas Station at Regent and King Streets, Georgetown.

Peodomo has since been arrested and has confessed to the crime, but police officials say they are still investigating the motive behind the attack.

A total of nine individuals were arrested in connection with the crime and investigations so far revealed that Peodomo was assisted by both Venezuelans and Guyanese in the country.

The explosive device, the suspected terrorist told investigators, was brought in the country from Venezuela.

The PSC said as investigations continue, the government must keep the nation informed.

“The Private Sector anticipates and looks forward to the Minister of Home Affairs keeping the nation further and fully informed as investigations continue into this threat to our country’s security, safety and stability emanating from Venezuela and urges all of our citizens to remain fully alert to this threat and to take the necessary precautions within their control to guard against it,” it noted.

Moreover, the PSC reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting national security, stability, and unity, noting that “Guyana’s progress depends on our collective resilience against acts of terror, violence, and division.”

The PSC also extended its deepest condolences to the family of the young victim and to all who were affected by this senseless tragedy.

“The PSC remains confident that together, as one people, we will overcome these challenges and continue building a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Guyana,” it noted.
