Handyman killed in hit and run at Land of Canaan

The Police are now hunting for the driver of a green double axle motor lorry who escaped after hitting down a pedestrian on the Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Tuesday morning.

Dead is Eon Sam, called ‘Yankee’, who is said to be in his mid-50’s and without a fixed address.

The accident reportedly occurred sometime around 05:00h while the pedestrian was attempting to cross the said public road.

An eyewitness disclosed that the motor lorry was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road when he collided with the pedestrian who was attempting to cross the roadway from east to west.

After hitting the man, the driver of the lorry reportedly continued to proceed South at a fast rate of speed.

The eyewitness, who was at the time traversing on the said public road, told Police that he after seeing what had transpired; he exited his vehicle and attempted to stop other vehicles.

However, he reported that another motor vehicle which was proceeding south ran over the pedestrian and also continued to proceed south.

The eyewitness then made contact with the Police and reported the incident.

Sam was reportedly deported from the United States some six years ago and has since been doing odd jobs following the closing down of Barama Company Limited where he was formerly employed.
