Guyana, Belize to strengthen partnership on climate resilience

Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn, over the weekend joined regional leaders and international partners at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, for the Caribbean Climate Action Showcase: Building Climate Resilience in Belize & Guyana—Uniting NDCs & REDD+ for Transparent Partnerships. The high-level event focused on the Caribbean’s climate leadership while amplifying financing needs and partnership opportunities for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Minister Benn led the Guyana delegation with a sterling presentation on Guyana’s implementation of the Nationally determined Contributions and Guyana- Norway REDD+ partnership and carbon market engagement. A joint video featuring stories from both Guyana and Belize also set the tone for a powerful, regionally unified message.

A ministerial panel explored progress, gaps, and opportunities in climate action, with discussions on NDC implementation, carbon markets, and access to climate finance. Donors and private-sector representatives were invited to share financing windows and investment opportunities, helping Caribbean countries unlock much-needed resources for adaptation, mitigation, and resilience-building.

The showcase focused on strengthening regional collaboration, expanding international support, forging new partnerships.

Coming out of the forum Belize and Guyana will also pursue broader engagement through potential dual events in both the Blue and Green Zones, youth participation, and an accompanying media campaign.

Additional deliverables include a policy brief, a showcase booklet, and a summary report outlining regional financing gaps.

As climate change intensifies across the region—bringing rising sea levels, stronger storms, and severe flooding—Belize and Guyana stand at a critical juncture. Both countries face unique yet similar vulnerabilities, with large indigenous and rural populations whose livelihoods depend heavily on natural resources.
