Prime Minister Mark Phillips and Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar today conducted a site visit at the Gast-to-Energy project at Wales, West Bank Demerara.
According to Minister Indar, the construction of the 300mw power plant is 78% completed while the entire project is 68% completed.
On September 22, the contractor (LYNDSAYCA) will commence the concrete pour for the second foundation, and at 7–10 day intervals, the pour will be executed for the third and fourth foundation. The foundation works are necessary to support the power plant’s steam and gas turbines that make up the combined cycle.
Each of the four gas turbines has a capacity of 57MW, and the capacity of the two steam turbines will produce a total capacity of 300MW. The contractor has set a 120-day deadline to complete all foundation works for the turbines.
Minister Indar noted that the completion of the power plant is one of the most important manifesto promises that is high on the agenda for the President Dr. Irfaan Ali-led Administration, as it will have a profound impact on the nation with a 50% cut in electricity costs.
Minister Indar further stated that the PPP/C Government is eager to have the project completed in 2026 so that citizens can reap the benefits of reduced electricity bills.
