The Guyana Police Force (GPF) will be called in to investigate the online publication of fake Statements of Poll (SOPs), says public relations officer of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Yolanda Ward.
Addressing a press conference following the close of polls today, Ward said GECOM has observed the circulation online of SOPs purporting to show votes cast in the favour of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party headed by US-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed.
Ward noted that at the time of publication of those documents, it would have been impossible for the counting of the ballots in any polling station to have commenced.
In this regard, she noted that GECOM rejects the publication of these fake SOPs.
“This despicable act can only be seen as creating a platform on which the political party associated with Team Mohamed Facebook page can create the impression that it has been successful at the polls,” Ward noted.
In this regard, she appealed to stakeholders to accept only the results of the elections that are posted on GECOM’s website in the form of SOPs and the official declarations made by electoral officials.
“The publication of fake results will be put to the Guyana Police Force for investigation,” she assured.
