Update on illegal operation in Potaro Mining District

Georgetown, Guyana – The Ministry of Natural Resources reported on September 10, 2026, that an illegal mining operation in the Potaro Mining District had been dismantled, resulting in the detention of five non-nationals.

Following an expansion of the sweep area, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission’s (GGMC) Corps of Wardens discovered additional miners, including four more non-nationals. They have since been detained.

The Corps of Wardens also found excavators and trucks that had been concealed in the surrounding jungle. Dredges, generators, water pumps, metal detectors and other mining equipment were also seized.

The ministry, through the GGMC and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, will continue surveillance and enforcement activities across all mining districts. Those found operating outside the law will face the full consequences. All non-nationals previously apprehended for involvement in illegal mining activities are being deported.
