Fire damages New Amsterdam house

A house located at Lot 4 Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), was damaged by fire earlier this morning.

At the time of the blaze, no one was at home. Five persons – a couple and their three adult children – resided at the property.

As a result of the fire, the four-bedroom two-story building was partially damaged; there was extensive damage to the upper flat where the fire is believed to have originated.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire was electrical.

Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald said it took the firefighters about four minutes from the time they received the call to arrive on the scene.

“We received a call at 8.50hrs. The first tender arrived at 8.54hrs within about two to three minutes on average. I was standing in the compound of the New Amsterdam Fire Station and we observed the smoke. When the crew arrived and the smoke that I personally looked at, I recognised that the fire is under control. Because of the fire dynamics, based on the smoke that I saw from a distance, I was aware and acknowledged that this fire is under control,” he noted.

Investigations are ongoing.
