Jomel Kenny, 23, was on Wednesday charged with causing the death of Scott Dorwart on January 26, 2026, at the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge and was granted $2 million bail.
He appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, where the causing death by dangerous driving charge was read to him. He was represented by attorney Everton Singh-Lammy.
Kenny, of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, was initially remanded to prison after being charged with being an unlicenced driver. He was also charged with breach of insurance and faulty packing of a load. Kenny will make his next court appearance on April 2, 2026.
Kenny was the driver of the cement-laden truck that reportedly lost power and brakes while crossing the bridge, causing it to roll backward into other vehicles, thereby resulting in the death of 24-year-old taxi driver Scott Dorwart of Third Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara, and injuries to others.
After the accident, the truck was later moved to the western shoulder of the bridge, where it was inspected and found to have a mechanical defect.
Meanwhile, the owner of the truck, 55-year-old Antonio Johnson, also of Anna Catherina, was charged with breach of insurance and permitting an unlicensed driver to operate the vehicle. He was granted bail in the sum of $50,000.
