COVID-19 cases reported at GuySuCo Training School

Several students attached to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) Training School at Port Mourant, Corentyne, have tested positive for COVID-19, prompting the temporary closure of the residential facility and the dispersal of students.

Information reaching this publication on Friday indicated that students who tested positive for COVID-19 have been placed in quarantine, while the remaining students, who reside at the institution, were sent home on Friday as a precautionary measure.

Students were reportedly advised to return on Wednesday but were instructed to contact the institution beforehand to ensure that conditions are safe and that normal operations can resume.

The exact number of positive cases could not be independently confirmed. However, sources familiar with the situation described it as a “significant” number.

The GuySuCo Training School serves students from various parts of the country who reside on campus while pursuing technical and vocational training.

Efforts to contact Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) Regional Health Officer Dr Vineshri Khirodhar for a comment on the situation proved unsuccessful. Calls and messages seeking clarification on the number of cases, any contact-tracing measures, and the involvement of public health officials went unanswered up to press time.

The development comes just days after Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said Guyana had not detected the NB.1.8.1 COVID-19 variant, which has attracted global attention, but noted that health authorities remain vigilant and continue to monitor developments closely.

The Minister had urged continued awareness of the disease, even though COVID-19 no longer commands the same level of public attention seen during the height of the pandemic.
