A Corentyne fisherman reported a significant loss on Thursday after a pirate attack resulted in the theft of half of his seine and catch, totaling over $700,000 in losses.
Deonarine Permaul of Nigg Village, Corentyne, returned to the Kilcoy fishing port on Thursday morning after a 24-hour fishing trip. Permaul, along with his crew, typically spends a full day at sea catching snapper and trout.
However, on Wednesday night, a pirate boat approached while Permaul and his three crew members were fishing in the Atlantic. The pirates cut his seine and stole half of the catch. Permaul stated that the seine alone is worth $700,000, with the stolen fish estimated at an additional $30,000 in value.
Although Permaul was able to recover half of the two-mile-long seine, the remaining portion is too short for him to return to sea. This has left Permaul and his three crew members without work, as they can no longer continue their fishing operations.
