Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of a China Railway First Group subcontractor who died early this morning after coming into contact with a section of GPL’s live electricity network at approximately 01:00hrs while conducting pipe laying works in the vicinity of Congress Place in Sophia.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues as they come to terms with this tragic loss.

The accidental contact with GPL’s live network also caused GPL’s Sophia F3 feeder to trip, resulting in brief interruptions to electricity service in Lamaha Gardens and Section K, Campbellville for approximately one hour. GPL’s Sophia F6 feeder also went offline for a for approximately 30 minutes, affecting customers in Areas A to E, Field Sophia.

GPL reminds all contractors undertaking works near electricity infrastructure of the need to follow established safety protocols.
This includes coordinating with GPL before work begins, identifying electrical hazards and ensuring that the necessary protective measures are in place before proceeding.

GPL urges everyone working near its network to make safety the first consideration at every stage of the job.
