General Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday bureaucrats in the administrative regions across the country to treat members of the public with dignity and humility.
Jagdeo said he has received reports that “these officials in many of the regions, sometimes they behave like little Lords”.
“They show no humility in the exercise of their functions or their jobs, they cause untold grief to people on the ground who seek help, (people) who like the party and like the government and even those who don’t like us,” he added.
According to Jagdeo, this approach will not be tolerated.
“Their job there is to ensure – in the government or the party – to ensure that they treat people civilly and in a helpful manner, even when they can’t accede to all of their demands,” the PPP GS noted, acknowledging that sometimes members of the public can also be unreasonable.
Nevertheless, he said among the issues often mishandled at the regional level are people’s remittances from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and the unfair removal of eligible persons from receiving their public assistance.
“These are two things I’ve encountered a lot where contrary to the policy of the government, people don’t implement it in a fair manner or in a helpful manner, Jagdeo said.
