Body of 15-year-old fished out of canal

The lifeless body of 15-year-old Ronaldo Sankar was last evening dragged to shore in a fishing net at Tain Canal, Corentyne, Berbice.

Reports indicate that at approximately 16:00hrs yesterday, the now dead teen and three other friends left their homes to “swim in the canal.”

However, according to Sankar’s relative, after swimming for a short while, the boys noticed that their 15-year-old friend was nowhere above water. After they were unsuccessful in their search for him, the young boys panicked and rushed to the missing boy’s home to inform his family.

Sankar’s mother stated that the police were contacted, and a search party was launched by residents in the area. She stated that due to the water’s depth, it was difficult for persons to dive properly, as such; “a cast net” was used to locate and bring the body to shore.

Sankar is one of four siblings. His friends are presently assisting police with investigations. (Ramona Luthi)
