Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, visited the Plaisance Railway Embankment Road Project, where he explained why a transmission line remains within the ongoing road construction area.
Minister Indar clarified that the pole supports a critical 69kV transmission line and cannot be removed at this time, as doing so would result in electricity outages along the East Coast of Demerara.
The transmission line can only be safely relocated after the alternative transmission line being constructed through the East Coast backlands is completed. This is expected by the end of November.
Minister Indar was accompanied by a team from Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), led by Team Leader of the Executive Management Committee, Mr. Kesh Nandlall, along with Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Bharat Harjohn, and Director of Engineering Services, Mr. Ryan Ross.
Additionally, the Minister also visited sections of the new transmission network under construction in the East Coast backlands, which will accommodate both 69kV and 230kV transmission lines.
Minister Indar explained that the infrastructure is being developed from scratch across wetlands and marshy terrain, requiring the construction of an access road to transport heavy equipment and facilitate the installation of foundations for the monopoles.
These works form part of Guyana’s wider grid-modernisation programme, under which PowerChina is constructing new 230kV and 69kV transmission infrastructure, while Kalpataru Projects International Limited is developing part of the 69kV transmission infrastructure.
Once the alternative line is completed, the existing 69kV infrastructure can be safely relocated with minimal customers being affected.
