Four fishermen are now safely back with their families after surviving a harrowing ordeal at sea when their vessel sank along the Atlantic Coast while they were engaged in fishing activities.
The fishermen were rescued through what has been described as a coordinated effort involving Chairman of the Rosignol Fishermen’s Co-op Society Ltd, Hardat Malchan, and ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard, along with volunteers who joined the search and rescue operation.
Reports are that the men had departed on a five-day fishing trip aboard a 45-foot drift seine boat when they encountered difficulties at sea on Friday afternoon. During the incident, the vessel reportedly experienced turbulence before eventually sinking.
The men were able to keep themselves afloat using the ice box until help came.
All four crew members were rescued safely and reunited with their relatives.
While the names of the crew was not made available, owner of the vessel, Alex Ramoutar, expressed gratitude to the Coast Guard and the volunteers who assisted in the operation.
Ramoutar said he was pleased with the rescue efforts but noted that the incident resulted in the total loss of the vessel, engine and fishing gear.
The losses are estimated at approximately $12 million.
He is now appealing for assistance and possible Government intervention as he considers his next move following the devastating setback.
