Four buildings were destroyed and eight persons were left homeless after a fire broke out at Cummings Street and North Road, Georgetown, on Wednesday.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) reported that the fire occurred at Lot 3 North Road, Bourda, behind Akbar Auto Sales.
Firefighters responding to the blaze found two buildings engulfed in flames, with the fire threatening nearby structures. As the fire spread, two additional houses caught fire, bringing the total number of affected buildings to four.
According to the GFS, firefighters brought the main blaze under control and extinguished the fire at the two nearby houses, preventing it from spreading further.
Two water tenders from the Fire Service Headquarters responded and were later joined by another water tender and a crew from the Campbellville Fire Station.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
