A fire completely destroyed a three-storey school converted into a hotel/apartment on fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, near the DHL Shipping office, on Tuesday evening.
The blaze displaced approximately 50 residents, including nationals from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Guyana, according to the property manager, Romel Samuels.
The building, which previously housed Tutorial High School until its relocation to Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, in the early 2000s, contained 30 rooms.
One occupant described hearing two loud explosions before the building was rapidly consumed by flames. The Guyana Fire Service confirmed that the fire was first reported at about 18:45h by a neighbour.
Investigations are ongoing.
