26 students stung in bee attack at Port Mourant Secondary

Twenty-six students of the Port Mourant Secondary were injured on Wednesday after they were attacked by Africanised bees during the lunch period, with one student being hospitalised.

Reports are that several students were on the school field when one student apparently disturbed vegetation where a bee nest was located.

The bees began swarming the student, who ran towards other students while attempting to escape, resulting in several of them also being stung. The affected students were taken to the Port Mourant Hospital, where they received medical attention. One student was hospitalised. The incident resulted in parents rushing to the hospital after being informed that their children had been stung.

Deeraja Arjun, who has three children attending the school, said he was at Guyana Power and Light when he received a telephone call informing him that one of his daughters had been stung.
He said his daughter sustained two stings.

Another parent, Ariana Smart, whose 11-year-old daughter, Botechara Amsarou Ariana Smart, was among those affected, raised concerns about the amount of vegetation around the school compound.
Meanwhile, Grade Seven student Botechara Amsarou, who spoke with this publication in the presence of her mother Shelly Ghanie, recalled that she had finished eating lunch and was coming out when she saw students running.

“I see a lot of kids running out, and by the time I run, they are all over my skin. I just have to cover my ears, and that’s all,” Amsarou related.

She said she was stung in two places and also saw other students being stung on different parts of their bodies.
