A 17-year-old lad is among three persons who have been remanded for the murder of Chinese national 61-year-old Chen Yongping during a robbery at home Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice home.
Pieter Baker, a 29-year-old pump operator of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme; Colwin Morris, a 29-year-old labourer of Cumberland, East Canje; along with the 17-year-old, made their court appearance today before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.
They were not required to plead to the charge of murder. Consequently, Baker and Morris were remanded to prison, while the teenager was remanded to the Juvenile Holding Centre.
The matter was adjourned to January 14.
The incident occurred on Monday, December 22, 2025, at about 05:00h, shortly after Chen and his 32-year-old son returned home from the Port Mourant Market, where they had gone to purchase cassava for their small chips-manufacturing business.
Police said the men were attacked shortly after driving into their yard. Both were robbed of cash and cellular phones valued at more than $1 million. They were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where Chen later succumbed to his injuries. His son was treated and later discharged.
