A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder and daring daylight robbery of a Berbice businessman.
Dead is Hemchan Utam, 54, of Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice. The incident occurred at around 10:30hrs at the businessman’s home and place of business.
Reports are that Utam and his workers were conducting business when they were pounced upon by the lone unmasked gunman.
A scuffle ensued between the businessman and the perpetrator, during which, Utam was shot.
The suspect then fled the scene, escaping with a quantity of jewellery and money.
Utam was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, police said a suspect is in custody assisting the police with their investigations.
A motorcar, which is suspected to be the getaway vehicle, was also lodged.
