President Dr Irfaan Ali has ordered a comprehensive restructuring of the Guyana Police Force’s public communication system, warning that poor, unstructured or ineffective communication can undermine law enforcement efforts and fuel public mistrust.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the Annual Police Officers’ Conference on Wednesday, the Head of State emphasised communication is central to the success of modern policing and must be treated as a strategic function rather than an afterthought.
“Communication is the key for the work of the Guyana Police Force and the success of the Force,” President Ali said, noting that global policing reforms have shown that weak or poorly managed communication often escalates situations instead of resolving them.
He cautioned that ineffective messaging, delayed information and unstructured public engagement can aggravate tensions, particularly during critical incidents, stressing that these shortcomings must now be addressed as part of the wider reform agenda for the Force.
The President said the restructuring of public communication within the Police Force is necessary to ensure clarity, accuracy and timeliness in information shared with citizens, especially in an era where misinformation can spread rapidly through social media and digital platforms.
He linked the communication overhaul to broader efforts to modernise policing through technology, intelligence-led operations and proactive crime prevention, arguing that even the most advanced policing systems can fail without strong public communication to support them.
