See full statement from the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation:
Today, the Eccles and Ruimveldt vicinity experienced a power outage due to an uncaring and errant contractor, Moore and Son Establishment, who was working on Caneview Avenue, near a new hotel. Their machine came into contact with a high-voltage line, rupturing it and causing residents and businesses to lose power at 4:46PM.
This careless behaviour was compounded by the fact that the contractor fled the vicinity of the incident, rather than inform GPL of their actions.
Nevertheless, GPL swiftly mobilized a technical team and restored power to the affected areas by 6:01PM.
We are wary of incidents of this nature where machines come into contact with GPL’s infrastructure. The Ministry has therefore instructed the GPL to get the Guyana Police Force involved since these incidents result in costly mobilization, inconvenience to customers, and loss of revenue for GPL.
The Ministry is therefore warning all contractors operating near the GPL’s network to be responsible and exercise caution. Failure to comply will result in punitive measures instituted against them, since these actions cause damage to property, equipment, and loss of revenue brought about by power outages.
