Minister of Education Sonia Parag on Wednesday met with a number of ‘Maths Monitors’ as part of efforts to expand and intensify the Mathematics Intervention Programme which has already yielded a five percent increase in passes at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.

The engagement sought to discuss and share ideas on potential bottlenecks and areas of improvement. Minister Parag told the educators that while the programme has already seen success, it has the potential to do much more.

“For this to happen, we have to start from a point of honesty,” Minister Parag said, noting that all shortfalls in the programme must be acknowledged and remedied.

Minister Parag said that while the five percent improvement may not seem like a lot, the fact that it accounts for 500-plus students deserves much praise.

“…and we thank you all for all the hard work that you have put into making that happen,” Minister Parag told the monitors.

Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer, Mr. Saddam Hussain reminded the monitors that they have the authority to effect changes that are necessary and in the best interest of Guyana’s children.

Minister Parag expressed confidence that with all hands on deck, the ‘Maths Intervention’ will see notable results.

Also joining the discussions were Permanent Secretary, Shannielle Hoosein-Outar; Chief Planning Officer, Ms. Mischka White-Griffith; Assistant Chief Education Officer (ACEO) with responsibility for Secondary Education, Mr. Sherwyn Blackman; and Coordinator of the Mathematics Intervention, Sir Leon Beaton.
