The Ministry of Public Health has reported that it is continuing to closely monitor the mosquito-borne Zika virus. Public Health Minister Dr. George Norton was quoted by GINA today as saying that fogging continues across the country, in addition to the distribution of chemically treated mosquito nets.
The Minister explained that one person has been sent for training at the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad and Tobago to operate the equipment already in place to test for vector borne diseases.
The Public Health Ministry is advising Guyanese to take precautionary measures to prevent the infection and spread of the Zika virus by the use of insect repellant, sleeping under mosquito nets, removing all containers which can hold stagnant water that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Screening of windows and doors and other openings can also aid in the reduction of mosquitoes.
