The New Amsterdam Hospital has confirmed that its Morbidity and Mortality Committee is investigating claims that a premature baby was wrongly pronounced dead, before later being returned to the institution where the infant subsequently died.

The matter surfaced following a post on social media attributed to the baby’s mother, outlining her account of events surrounding her preterm delivery at the hospital on January 14, 2026.

When contacted by this publication, relatives declined to comment and abruptly ended the call, indicating that they were not prepared to engage the media at this time. As a result, the account remains unverified and is based solely on the social-media narrative.

In the post, the mother stated that she first sought medical attention at Port Mourant Hospital after experiencing contractions and vaginal bleeding. She wrote that she was later advised to proceed to New Amsterdam Hospital if her condition worsened.

She recounted that after further bleeding, she travelled to New Amsterdam Hospital, where she underwent an ultrasound examination, blood tests, and was admitted. She said doctors informed her that the baby’s survival chances were uncertain because of the early stage of pregnancy.

The post further described that she later delivered in Ward Three without a doctor or midwife present, and that the baby was placed in a bedpan with the placenta still attached. According to her version, the baby was not immediately assessed or resuscitated.

She stated that relatives later discovered the baby was alive while preparing for burial and rushed him back to the hospital, where he was placed on oxygen in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She said the baby later died.

She also raised concerns about the baby being placed in the mortuary without the family being informed.

These assertions have not been independently verified.

Nevertheless, in a statement issued on January 20, the New Amsterdam Hospital said the patient was diagnosed with a “previable threatened abortion of 24 weeks gestation” and was admitted for management.

The hospital explained that in medical classification, a product of conception under 28 weeks is deemed an “abortus,” and that the case involved a 24-week gestation.

“The patient was provided with psychosocial support from the institution,” the statement said, while confirming that the matter is under investigation by the hospital’s Morbidity and Mortality Committee.

Hospital officials neither confirmed nor rejected the notion that the woman was admitted after a failed abortion, citing patient confidentiality and the ongoing review.

The New Amsterdam Hospital has extended condolences to the family and said the review will determine whether established clinical procedures were properly followed.
