Police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old miner who was reportedly crushed by a mud wall in a collapsing mining pit and subsequently drowned beneath the surface on Monday.
Dead is Andel Payne called “Fat man” of Kaneville Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
According to information received, the incident occurred at around 10:00hrs on the day in question at 35 Miles Konawaruk Backdam, Potaro River, (Region 8).
INews understands that Payne was employed by a 34-year-old Dredge Owner of One Mile Extension, Wismar, Linden as a Jet man.
On the day of his demise, the 23-year-old was in the process of “jetting” in the company of other workers in the mining pit when a piece of mud wall collapsed behind him, pinning him to the area.
Police say that by this time, the water had begun to rise rapidly causing Payne to be covered beneath the surface where he subsequently drowned.
He was dug out shortly after and rushed to the Mahdia District Hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 13:40hrs.
