Fisherman suspected to have died in fire that destroyed his home in Essequibo

Police are investigating a fire of unknown origin, which partially destroyed the dwelling house of Terry Persaud Lall, a 38-year-old fisherman who lived at Lot 4 Paradise, Essequibo Coast. The incident, which occurred at around 21:30 hrs last night, is believed to have resulted in the death of Terry Persaud Lall.

Enquiries disclosed that Lall lived alone in a one-flat concrete house (20 feet by 15 feet) on the western side of Paradise Public Road, Essequibo Coast.

Lall’s sister, Somattie Persaud, a 41-year-old security guard who lives in the same yard (Lot 4 Paradise), claimed that around 13:00 hrs yesterday, her brother Terry Persaud Lall left his home and went to Lake Mainstay.

At about 19:00 hrs last evening, she saw her brother return home and enter his house. He was highly under the influence of alcohol (drunk) at the time.

The woman claimed that at around 21:30 hrs last night, she was at her home when she saw a fire emanating from her brother’s house. As a result, the Fire Service and the Police were informed.

The Region’s fire department went into action and extinguished the fire, but by then, the western half of the house was completely destroyed. Burnt human remains were seen among the debris, suspected to be that of Terry Persaud Lall.
The burnt human remains were removed and escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a PME.

Investigations continue.
