Police are investigating an alleged incident that occurred between 09:30 and 10:45 hours today (Wednesday) at Enterprise backlands, East Coast Demerara. The incident involved Lennox Luke, called ‘Mikey’ (now deceased), a 67-year-old male of African descent from Kitty, Georgetown, along with Selwyn Dean, a 29-year-old male construction worker from Kitty.

Enquiries disclosed that on the mentioned date and time, Luke, who was the owner of a piece of land, went to the said land in the company of Selwyn Deane to clean up and erect a fence.

While work was ongoing, a large swarm of bees emerged and attacked the two men. In an attempt to escape, Selwyn ran forward, and Luke ran backwards and fell to the ground, where he was attacked by the swarm of bees. Selwyn ran away after sustaining a few bee stings.

The EMT was contacted, and along with NARIE personnel, arrived and ‘smoked’ the area. With the assistance of public-spirited citizens, they managed to put Luke in a motor lorry, GAD 5904. He was escorted in an unconscious state to the Enmore Regional Hospital. After receiving treatment at about 11:20 hours, he was pronounced dead.

Marks were seen on his back, forearm, and the back of his head. The body is presently lying at the Jerricks Funeral Home, awaiting PME.

The scene was photographed and statements were taken as investigations continue.
