Iwokrama condemns harassment of Giant Green Anaconda in Protected Forest

The Iwokrama International Centre strongly condemns the actions of a group of passersby who were recently observed physically harassing a Giant Green Anaconda within the Iwokrama Forest. Individuals were seen pulling and interfering with the animal, causing unnecessary stress and potential harm.

Wildlife within the Iwokrama Forest is protected, and such actions are both irresponsible and unlawful. The Iwokrama Forest is home to a rich diversity of species, all of which play critical roles in maintaining ecological balance. Interference with wildlife not only threatens individual animals but also disrupts the integrity of the ecosystem.

The Linden–Lethem Road, which passes through the Iwokrama Forest, extends for 72 kilometres. All people traversing this corridor are reminded that it is illegal to harm, harass, or interfere with wildlife under the Iwokrama Act of 1996.

Iwokrama further reminds the public to:

•DRIVE CAREFULLY– Be alert for oncoming traffic and wildlife crossing.
•OBSERVE SPEED LIMITS– the speed limit within the Iwokrama forest is 50 km/h. As the road is unpaved, speeding significantly increases the risk of accidents.
•STAY IN YOUR LANE – especially at blind corners.
•Do not drink and drive.
•DO NOT LITTER– Keep your waste in your vehicle and dispose of it properly at designated bins.
•DO NOT HARM WILDLIFE–It is illegal to capture or remove animals from the forest.
•NO HUNTING, FISHING, or MINING – within the Iwokrama Forest.
•DO NOT LIGHT FIRES within the forest or along the road.
•DO NOT POLLUTE WATERWAYS- with litter, fuel, or oils. 3-Mile Creek is a water source for Fair View Village – No washing of vehicles, littering, pooping or any polluting activities.
•Respect all communities along the route to Lethem.

Iwokrama urges all road users to respect wildlife and allow animals to cross safely without disturbance. Responsible behavior is essential to safeguarding Guyana’s natural heritage.

The Centre calls on the public to uphold the law and play an active role in protecting the Iwokrama Forest.
