[Yesterday] Tuesday 4 November 2025, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, a national of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, has been elected as the new Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The election took place during the 23rd Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture (IABA) being held in Brasilia, Brazil. Dr Ibrahim was nominated by the Government of Guyana and endorsed by the Caribbean Community.
Dr Ibrahim will serve a five-year term at the helm of the Institute, which is the specialized agency of the Inter-American System responsible for promoting agricultural development and rural well-being in the Americas. His election marks a historic milestone, being the first Guyanese and only the second national from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to be elected to this distinguished position.
A highly distinguished agronomist, Dr. Ibrahim brings more than 30 years of international experience in agricultural development, environmental management, and climate change adaptation across 32 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. His career has been marked by exceptional service within IICA and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), where he previously served as Director General from 2016 to 2024 and was later named Director General Emeritus in recognition of his outstanding leadership.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ibrahim has demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing sustainable and inclusive agricultural systems, innovation in livestock and agroforestry, and climate-resilient food production. He has also mobilized over US$250 million in funding for agricultural research, education, and innovation, and has contributed extensively to policy development, higher education, and capacity building in the region.
Dr. Ibrahim holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands, an M.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources from CATIE, Costa Rica, and a B.Sc. in Agriculture from the University of Guyana.
His appointment is expected to strengthen IICA’s leadership role in driving innovation, sustainability, and resilience in the agricultural sector of the Americas and the Caribbean.
The Government of Guyana extends heartiest congratulations to Dr Ibrahim on his election.
Guyana’s gratitude is extended to the countries of the Caribbean Community for their endorsement and steadfast support as well as to all the other countries of the hemisphere that lent their valuable support to Dr Ibrahim.
