The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has implemented the testing of electronic ankle bracelets to better monitor inmates who are tasked with performing work within and outside of the prison facility.

Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot stated that this form of technology has the potential to change the way the service monitors and rehabilitates incarcerated individuals, especially those involved in various rehabilitation programmes.

“By utilising advanced technology, these devices will allow prison officers to know the exact location of the inmate and alert them quickly if they are outside the authorised zone,” the director noted.

The bracelets are tamper-resistant devices worn around the ankles and must be worn at all times.

The device uses radio frequency signals to communicate with a monitoring station.

The Prisons Director indicated that he will continue to engage the Minister of Home Affairs to ensure that the programme is expanded to cover key areas of priority.
