The Ministry of Public Works has disclosed that emergency repairs to a link span at the Supenaam Stelling is progressing ahead of schedule.
The Works began on Thursday evening at 22:00hrs, with a specialised team immediately tackling the front-end structure.
During Phase One, four panels and two transoms were successfully replaced, while the sway braces and deck beams were swapped and secured. Additionally, all other fractured structural members were rehabilitated, bringing Phase One to a successful close.
In the final stretch (Phase Two) at the backend, the damaged beam has been removed and the new replacement is currently being installed. Once this is in place, the sway beams will be secured and the deck plates reinstalled.
As of now, Phase Two is 80% complete. Given this momentum, the ministry anticipates the project will be finished well ahead of the designated 48-hour repair window.
“These critical interventions are essential to the safety and longevity of the link span, ensuring that our ‘roll-on/roll-off’ vessels can continue to serve the public and the business community safely and efficiently,” the ministry noted.
