Police are investigating the discovery of a quantity of yellow metal suspected to be raw gold, which was found on Thursday March 26, 2026 about 07:20hrs during screening procedures at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspected raw gold was found in the carry-on luggage of a 62-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, both Guyanese/Canadian citizens, who were scheduled to depart Guyana on a flight to Toronto, Canada.

The matter was reported and the two passengers were detained by Customs officials for further processing. The suspected metal was weighed in their presence and amounted to 15.521 ounces, after which it was secured.

Investigations are ongoing.
