In a landmark move for community sports and infrastructure, the Ministry of Public Works has officially commissioned Guyana’s first-ever PVC plastic all-weather basketball court in Campbellville, Georgetown.
“The $39 million facility represents more than just a sports venue, it is the fulfillment of a direct promise made by the Government of Guyana to the residents of Campbellville following the displacement of their previous court during the construction of the Conversation Tree four-lane road project,” the ministry noted in a statement.
During the commissioning ceremony no Sunday, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, emphasised that the ministry’s primary goal was ensuring the community received a world-class replacement that exceeded expectations.
“Cost was secondary. Community satisfaction was number one. We gave the people of Campbellville what they asked for and what they deserved,” Minister Edghill stated.
The new facility is designed with modern safety and durability at its core. The All-weather surface was built to international standards to support the development of local athletes.
The Ministry of Public Works also committed to sponsoring a yearly tournament for the next three years. This initiative aims to foster community spirit, discover local talent, and maintain the facility as a cornerstone of Campbellville social life
