Baganara Island Resort, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), has expanded its tourism offerings with the launch of five newly constructed overnight cottages and a modern conference center.

The addition brings 10 new rooms into service, increasing the resort’s total accommodation capacity to 36 rooms and strengthening its position as a premier eco and conference destination.

The expansion marks a significant milestone for the resort, enhancing its appeal for leisure travelers while positioning it as a competitive venue for conferences, meetings, and high-level engagements, in keeping with the Government’s wider tourism strategy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, deputising for President Dr. Irfaan Ali, reflected on his long-standing connection with the Essequibo River and described Baganara as a symbol of Guyana’s growing eco and conference tourism potential.

He noted that the resort’s tranquil surroundings make it more than just a destination.
“The serenity and beauty of this place, and the sense of peace in every breath, remind us that

Baganara is not just a destination; it is a jewel in Guyana’s ecotourism crown,” he said.
Phillips added that the new conference cottages are “bridges to opportunity, platforms for dialogue, and havens for ideas,” and thanked the owners for helping to turn visitors into lifelong ambassadors for Guyana.

In addition, Tourism, Industry, and Commerce Minister Susan Rodrigues described the expansion as part of a carefully planned tourism journey aligned with President Ali’s vision of making Guyana the premier sustainable tourism destination in the region within the next five years.

She noted that Baganara, developed into one of Guyana’s leading eco-resorts, now spans approximately 187 acres and offers a range of amenities, with all rooms integrated into the natural environment.

“Our President is not focused on creating his own legacy. He is focused on preparing our economy for the future, where small businesses and communities will be the real beneficiaries of tourism,” she said.

Rodrigues also highlighted government investments in training and standards, noting that over 8,000 Guyanese have been trained in hospitality and tourism services over the past five years, with a hospitality training institute nearing completion.

Meanwhile, Chief Investment Officer and Head of Go-Invest Dr . Peter Ramsaroop placed the expansion within the framework of the President’s “Economy by Design,” noting that as connectivity improves, visitors will seek authentic experiences beyond Georgetown.

“What we are seeing today is delivery and results. The President has designed an economy where every sector is connected, and Baganara fits perfectly into that vision,” he remarked.

He added that the resort has strong potential to serve as a retreat venue for high-level government and corporate engagements, supporting Guyana’s integrated development strategy.

With its new cottages and conference facilities, Baganara Island Resort is poised to play an even greater role in Guyana’s tourism and economic landscape. (Raywattie Deonarine)
