President Dr Irfaan Ali today announced a major crackdown on corruption in the process for issuing drivers’ licences, noting that an audit has already uncovered those licences that were illegally obtained.
He made the announcement as he joined senior members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for their Traditional Christmas Breakfast. The President said authorities are concluding a post-audit in relation to the drivers’ licencing system.
“We have been able to tell, because of the system, all those who wrote the theoretical exam and passed – and that is the only way to move forward with the practical exam – and we can tell you all those who got a practical certificate, and then all those who actually got a licence at GRA. So, we have been able to triangulate the entire process and we understand the discrepancies within the whole process. Because if you have 150 people passing a theory, but 450 people getting their practical certificate, then something is wrong, you agree with me?” the President noted.
“And in the areas where there are discrepancies…we have all the names of persons who got a practical paper but never passed the theoretical exam. And we are going to give those persons in the public domain six weeks to surrender themselves and go through back the process, or after that, we are going to publish all the names in the newspaper, suspend the licence and prosecute them. That is the only way we can beat this corruption,” he added.
In addition to the drivers, the President posited that “we have to prosecute all parties involved.”
“GRA gave more license than practical and theoretical passes. So, we have now triangulated the entire process and we have all the data and information before us. I told you technology and the use of technology will be deployed at full scale. And that is what we are doing,” the Head of State affirmed.
