The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) wishes to advise the public that an investigation was conducted earlier this morning into the incident involving a water eruption along Agriculture Road, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, which occurred on December 30, 2025, at approximately 15:30 hours.
The investigation revealed that the eruption was caused by water hammering, which occurs when pressure surges in pipelines under certain conditions. GWI wishes to clarify that the transmission line involved was not connected to any water treatment plant or active distribution network; thus, there was no impact on our existing infrastructure.
Importantly, no injuries were recorded, and no damage was caused to nearby properties or vehicles as a result of the incident.
While the eruption caused damage to a section of the roadway, GWI’s technical teams responded promptly. The affected area has since been restored to a crusher-run level, and works are planned to return the roadway to an asphaltic finish in the shortest possible time.
GWI further assures residents that no customers in the community or surrounding areas were affected, and there has been no disruption to the water supply.
The company remains committed to ensuring the safety, reliability, and integrity of its infrastructure and will continue to monitor the area as a precaution.
GWI thanks the public for their understanding and cooperation.
