President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced that early next year, “you will see a lot of people being sent home” in connection with drivers’ licences’ fraud.
He made the revelation today during an interview with a panel of journalists where he mentioned the recent audit that uncovered numerous discrepancies in the driver’s licencing system.
Earlier this month, the President had announced that authorities are in possession of a list of names of individuals who improperly obtained their drivers licences.
“We have all the names of persons who got a practical paper but never passed the theoretical exam. And we are going to give those persons in the public domain six weeks to surrender themselves and go through back the process, or after that, we are going to publish all the names in the newspaper, suspend the licence and prosecute them. That is the only way we can beat this corruption,” the Head of State had announced on December 9.
In addition to the drivers, the President had posited that “we have to prosecute all parties involved.”
He had noted that, “GRA gave more license than practical and theoretical passes. So, we have now triangulated the entire process and we have all the data and information before us. I told you technology and the use of technology will be deployed at full scale. And that is what we are doing.”
During the interview today, the President did not specify which individuals will be “sent home”.
