The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has digitised approximately 90 per cent of prisoners’ records and warrants, as part of efforts to modernise the correctional system and improve administrative efficiency.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot made the disclosure on Monday while delivering remarks at the opening of the Senior Correctional Officers’ Conference 2026.

According to Elliot, the initiative was undertaken through collaboration with the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) and forms part of the broader push to integrate technology within the operations of the prison service.

“Further on in the area of advancing technology, the Guyana Prison Service collaborated with the National Data Management Authority to digitalise prisoners’ records and warrants and staff personal files,” Elliot stated.

He noted that the process has already significantly progressed, with nearly all records now stored electronically.

“All of the staff personal files are already digitalised, 90 per cent of the prison population records and warrants are digitalised, and the remainder will be completed shortly,” he added.

The move to digital records is expected to strengthen the management of prisoner information, improve data accessibility, and support more efficient decision-making within the prison system.

Elliot made the remarks while outlining several developments within the prison service during 2025, including investments in infrastructure, staff development and technology upgrades.

The conference, held under the theme “Fostering Growth, Driving Synergy and Securing the Future of Corrections,” brings together senior officers and regional partners to discuss prison reform strategies and best practices in correctional management.
